Dear All,

In the year 2002, the day before Onam, brother and I have decided to go to Manjeri to celeberate Onam with mother. Late afternoon we left for Salem on a Bus. Our driver was an escaped lunatic somehow talked his way into his job with the Tamil Nadu Gov. He sang lively tunes and carried on lively conversation with passangers addressing them directly.

Brother and I were sitting at the front, and the driver, taking a sudden liking to us, decided to amuse us with some visual jokes-- pretending to nod off for a few moments, then jerking back to conciousness just in time to avoid an oncoming truck or acting as if the breaks had failed as we hurtled down to more or less perpendicular incline to the sort of speed usually experienced only by astronauts, causing brother and me to try to sit on each other's lap.

It was such a perfect journey -- it was such an exhilatering combination of terror and excitment, like having an heart attack and enjoying it. We reached Salem and, to be on the safer side, decided to take a taxi for the rest of our jounrney.

We reached Manjeri, celeberated onam like prisoners reunited after long wars.

During our college days Michael Jackson's songs were part of our campus life. The album BAD was released in 1987 when I was in Pre Degree 1st year. All my friends including me had a copy of the BAD album. (Then the only cassette shops in town were PAICO and Srambicals.) Those who didn't have the cassette borrowed it from their friends. I still remember Anand Varma singing "Man In The Mirror" during our Chemistry tuition class at Antony Sirs house. Many people who doesn't know much about Michael thought him to be a female seeing his photo in the cover of the cassette.

During that time my brother Deepak folded his Physics Record book with Michael Jackson's poster and wrote on the book MICHEL JACKSON. During the lab period the Physics teacher while correcting the record book shouted Michael and nobody responded. All were wondering why she ws shouting Michael. Finally she asked who is Michael . Then all said, Nobody is here by that name. Then whose book is this. It's Deepak's. She thought Deepak's name is Michael Jackson.

During the Grammy Awards Ceremony which was shown in Doordarshan at 10 pm (only highlights) Michael Jackson performing Man In The Mirror was shown. Many of you must be still remebering the same.

Due to the impact of BAD many of us started listening to his old albums too. Thriller whcih is the best selling album of all time has great songs like Thriller, Beat It, Billie Jean. At that time there was no cable TV. So they only way is to hire a Video Cassette and see it. I still remember a bunch of us hiring the VHP cassette from Chitra Video Libraray and seeing it at Anand Varma's house at Rubber Board quarters. Thriller video was really mind blowing one.

During our Degree years came Dangerous album. It was very popular too. I remember Pre Degree students Ansar, Shajan, Vinil etc singing Who is it song . But the best song in that album was Black or White. Even girls started dancing to the beat of that song. It was a very popular song in the campus.

It's really sad to hear that Michael Jackson who was part of our college life is no more. We really miss you. But you live in our hearts.

A lot of money is needed for organizng the party (ie, for sound system, gana mela troup, food, stage, lights, decorations, security, printing and stationery,...etc). So all of us must donate some amount for the same.

There will be a registration fee of Rs. 100 for single and Rs.200 for family of four (which includes the cost of food coupon too). But this alone doesn't cover the total expense. So you have to donate as much as you like. Those who are donating more than 500 need not have to pay the regsitration fee again. But we expect a minimum of Rs.1000 from each of you. The names of those who donate more than Rs.1000 will be published and also will be announced during the event.

Jokes apart we 'did' get into serious studies at 'crucial times', as well :), and also were known for our great ‘nerve’ to shout out at those Guys who always kept their ‘nicks’, secret :)..
In this aspect the girls of ‘Jambassar’ had been the regular bait of their competetive Boys’ gang, which was none other than Kiran John and his friends themselves !!
As a token of their appreciation we were always welcomed by a loud ‘coo’ whenever we staged a ‘decent’ programme like 'The Kitchen Orchestra'(sworn the fact, indeed a creative and a novel programme meant ‘only’ for entertainment :D) or our bags(holding less or no books) hanging down from the branches of those gigantic trees of the campus or at least our nicks shouted back (twice as loud as ours) by each of them..

Memories flooding back, remembering 'em all and smiling; so nostalgic, are mingled with that slight pain when I realise those crazy times we had together are never going to bounce back..

Fifteen years to forward, the ~~naughty~~ girls of the gang are metamorphosed to responsible family women, most of them employed, polished and matured!(hopefully- at least, a big YES! Here.. :D)

Holding a blog is no joke.

The hard and sincere work behind collecting data, uploading, editing, publishing, updating and the presentation of each and every post are far more time-consuming than a reader here can guess.
We should indeed realise the painstaking effort, Kiran has taken up in these recent months to bring back the nostalgic feeling in everyone of us..
The wonderful idea of a get together surely deserves a special and a louder applause..

The healthy relationship with the professors, the fun times with friends, the beautiful campus, those sentimental times of parting…each memory is special…

Let us all meet, coz it’s time for celebration… to rekindle those memories of past togetherness..

Great to hear about this reunion!! No doubt mates, this is the most important factor in every youths life...to remember and be a part of their past. Surely this is a huge task to accomplish and ideas above all are attendance to make this event a great success. On the contrary very much scary for many not to take part in this :-) hahahahaha, coz the past could hurt!!!! Then there’s only one medicine for that is "touch of a friend and trust in friendship" During college days this is what every one treasured the most and it will never die! I am sure all would agree to this and get your arse down there for this reunion. I meant to all….long to meet all my buddies and goodies then and now at this day!!! Anyways back to the topic... count me in for this all the way... Session 1 sounds good. Surely many would have loads to pour out to their professors for not listening and bunking classes just for the "Cholla" and advice their current status... Session 2....I am sure the college has never seen any DJ events in this 21st Century…..Lets bring in an awesome DJ group to pump up the couples with music and dance especially with songs of the 80's & 90' and relieve them from their stressed life!!!T shirt sounds good, if the funds are supportive then try give-away small mementos to each every college attendees to carry with them to their foreign country to remember this day. Alumni to be Honoured – mmmm..…Bin Laden… in case if you have found none then I am privileged to take that stand….:-) keep me posted!!!!

In our collegedays on all ocassions like Pre Degree Day, Degree Day, College Day, etc we had Ganamela as part of our functions. Dear All,
The first time I went to an south Indian restaurant in Jalandhar I used my fingers. The waiter looked at me critically and said, "Fresh off the South, are you?" I blanched. My fingers, which a second before had been taste buds savouring the food a little ahead of my mouth, became dirty under his gaze. They froze like criminals caught in the act. I didn't dare lick them. I wiped them guiltily on my napkin. He had no idea how deeply those words wounded me. They were like nails being driven into my flesh. I picked up the knife and fork. I had hardly ever used such instruments. My hands trembled. My sambar lost its taste...
It is true that those we meet can change us, sometimes so profoundly that we are not the same afterwards. I am sure that we all must have changed so much so that we barely understand each other... Don't you guys think that it's better we meet up somewhere sometime (in the near future) before we start further changing away from your true self..?

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) has issued a formal warning to Vodafone India regarding an advertisement which features a pug dog running after a bus. The board also sent a warning to Nirvana Films which made the advert for Vodafone.
In its notice AWBI said: “The pet dog was made to run, gallop and chase the school van for a long time on a public road. Thereby, the dog was made to undergo severe pain and suffering due to the exhaustion caused by chasing (the bus).” AWBI lawyer S.R. Sundaram said: “The final film should strictly follow the script submitted at the time of pre-shoot permission for the animal performances. It is also directed that the performing animals should not be subjected to any cruelty, failing which the AWBI will initiate legal proceedings under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.”
The pug dog, called Rocky is the Vodafone Essar brand icon and has been used in a series of adverts promoting the rebranding of Hutch as Vodafone.
The film company refutes the complaint saying that the film was made in South Africa and that they have a “post-shoot fitness certificate duly signed by the veterinary doctor”
The AWBI has ordered the company to remove the section of the advert that it objects to and resubmit the advertisement for approval.

Biography
Mary Elizabeth Alexander was born in Allahabad, India, on February 17, 1951. Although christened Mary Elizabeth, she has been called "Meena" since birth, and, in her fifteenth year, she officially changed her name to Meena. Not so much an act of defiance as one of liberation, Alexander writes: "I felt I had changed my name to what I already was, some truer self, stripped free of the colonial burden" in her autobiography, Fault Lines (74). Representing her own multi-lingual nature, "Meena" meanings in 'fish' in Sanskrit , 'jewelling' in Urdu, and 'port' in Arabic. Alexander and her family lived in Allahabad, yet returned every summer to Kerala where her mother's parents resided.
In 1956, the Sudan gained independence and asked other Third World countries for assistance in establishing its government. Alexander's father applied for a job with the Sudanese government and the family relocated to Khartoum. From age five to eighteen, Alexander traversed the waters between the Sudan and India, between Khartoum and Kerala, and between her immediate family and her grandparents. Once she was eighteen and had received her degree from Khartoum University, Alexander left her Sudanese home for Nottingham University in Britain. It was here that she earned her Ph.D., but her tie with India was not broken. She returned to Pune to her grandparents, and ended up working at Delhi University, Central Institute of Hyderabad, and Hyderabad University.
It was in Hyderabad that Alexander met her husband, David Lelyveld. In 1979, the two moved to New York City, where they still live with their two children: Adam Kuravilla Lelyveld (b. 1980) and Svati Maraiam Lelyveld (b. 1986). Alexander is currently a professor at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and still takes trips back to Kerala annually.
Literature
Meena Alexander's literary career began early, at the tender age of ten, when she began writing poetry, and while her poetry might be her best-known work, her works span a variety of literary genres. Her first book, a single lengthy poem, entitled The Bird's Bright Wing, was published in 1976 in Calcutta.
Since then, Alexander has published seven volumes of poetry, including River and Bridge; two novels: Nampally Road (1991) and Manhattan Music (1997); a collection of both prose and poetry, The Shock of Arrival: Reflections on Postcolonial Experience; a study on Romanticism: Women in Romanticism: Mary Wollstonecraft, Dorothy Wordsworth and Mary Shelley; and her autobiography, Fault Lines.
Establishing Identity in Fault Lines
Fault Lines is Alexander's autobiography. Not only an unraveling of her past, the book also highlights themes that occur in Alexander's poetry . As a result of her family's relocations as a youth, Alexander struggles in Fault Lines to forge a sense of identity, despite a past full of moves and changes. Thus, this work revolves around the theme of establishing one's self, an identity independent of one's surroundings. In her autobiography she writes: "I am, a woman cracked my multiple migrations. Uprooted so many times she can connect nothing with nothing" (3). In fact, the title itself suggests a questioning of lines, boundaries, definitions of oneself. As Alexander writes, "I am a poet writing in America. But American poet?...An Asian-American poet then?...Poet tout court?...A woman poet, a woman poet of color, a South Indian woman who makes up lines in English...A Third World woman poet...?" (193). Alexander searches for her own identity and self-creation amidst a world that strives to define, identify, and label people. These definitions of race and nationality prove difficult to defy.
The tension surrounding self-identification emerges in a scene where Alexander's son, Adam, encounters a man who asks him: "What are you?" Adam, of mixed heritage, chooses to identify himself as neither American nor Indian, but, rather, a Jedi knight (172). Alexander asks: "What did my first-born wish for himself? Some nothingness, some transitory zone where dreams roamed, a border country without passport or language?" (172). Even choosing a cultural identification has its boundaries and borders by which to abide.
Early in her youth, Alexander's mother tells her she must never take a job; that her work is to raise her children (14). Alexander's choices obviously took her in a direction different from that which her mother had taught her, choosing both a career and a family. Thus, the process of self-creation for Alexander has numerous facets: creating an identity despite a patchwork past; fighting against definitions demanded by greater society; and, also, fighting against traditions and definitions enforced within the community.

Amazing effort from Kiran's side...Now, what we need is some good publicity. As we have mentioned that this is a get together for students who were in CMS from 1985 to 1995, we need to get our juniors and seniors involved in the process. It would be a good idea to nominate representatives from each year/batch?. Can't we get more visibility for this blog on google and other search engines? Also can we have separate pages for people from other batches, rather than getting all their pics and snippets into Kiran's page ? or if our juniors and seniors have created blogs of their own, can that be linked to ours? Also how abt starting an 1985-1995 page on orkut too? That way it becomes much more easier for all of us to communicate, and for new members who are interested to join...I can go on and on , but what we first need is to have a real meeting ....what say u guys??? The CMS College Alumini Association annual day celebration is on 26th Jauary 2008. Although the get toghether will be a get together of the very old Aluminis (1960 & 70's batches) , hope this year it will be better. Last year I could find only one of our batch mates Mr. Javeen of Economics who is a Municipal Councillor now. Hope to see a few there at the party. Watch out this site. I will try to upload some photos of the celebrations.

People who studied at CMS can't forget Elias sir (nick named Kanji Elias) . He was a very funny character and a very lovable person. Elias sir passed away two years before owing to cancer. Mohan Kurian sir(fat guy)- Physics Dept, Premchand Sir - Chemistry Dept, Unnithan sir - Maths Dept, Mollykutty Teacher - Chemistry Dept also are in the list of teachers who rest in heaven.

Friends, hope you remember Beeta Koshy who studied in Zoology (friend of Rincy, Zeena & Cini) during 1989-92. Beeta was a very sweet, cute girl. After our college years I haven't seen her. Last year I read in news paper that she passed away. It was so shocking to hear that. She was unmarried. Let's pray for her soul.
